How to Know, What to Scale

Exploring how imaging acts as a technical mediator of human activities, Susan Schuppli, and Wendy Hui Kyong Chun are joined by moderator Nishant Shah to reflect on how images and text translate biases and prejudice – what we think we know. In this conversation, the claim that images and language can be a way of knowing or feeling the world directly is challenged, revealing racialised, bureaucratic, and analytic techniques that make them calculable and quantifiable. Raising questions about the historical roots of sentiment analysis and the aggregation of material evidence, they break down the generative methods that scale, assemble and construct worlds.

Susan Schuppli is a researcher and artist based in the UK whose work examines material evidence from war and conflict to environmental disasters and climate change. Her current work is focused on learning from ice and the politics of cold.
Wendy Hui Kyong Chun is Simon Fraser University’s Canada 150 Research Chair in New Media, Professor of Communication, and Director of the Digital Democracies Institute.
Nishant Shah is the Director of Research & Outreach and Professor of Aesthetics and Cultures of Technology, at ArtEZ University of the Arts, The Netherlands.
